Just like humans, all dogs need their own special place, where they can relax, sleep and maybe dream of fetching their favorite toy or a nice, tasty bone.
If your dog stays mainly indoors, this may be a dog basket or just an old blanket on the floor, but what solutions are there if your dog needs a special place outdoors too?
The answer is having their very own dog house located in the garden or yard, which will give them a safe and comfortable spot to call their own.
Ideal for medium to larger sized dogs, this product ticks most of the boxes if you are looking for simplicity, durability and want a dog house which also provides great value for your money.
The Suncast DH250 Dog House is a relatively simple product in several ways, but therein lies its appeal. It can be assembled by simply snapping its parts together, so you won't need to go hunting for your toolbox. Once built, it is pleasing to the eye and gives your dog a genuine home of their own.
The size of this dog house means it is suitable for larger dogs which weight up to 70 lbs., and the wide door opening means they can easily come and go as they please. There is even a removable vinyl door which can be closed when either you or your dog want some peace and quiet.
The resin construction is strong enough to stand up to even the worst of the weather. On the subject of weather, you will be aware it is important that dogs stay cool in summer, and they can do so in this house thanks to vents which allow air to circulate.
Cleaning is easy, as all you need to do is wipe the exterior with a damp cloth, and the removable roof means you have easy access to clean the interior too. The floor of the house has a channel to drain away any rain or other fluids so that your dog stays dry and comfortable.
With all these features, and given the larger size of this dog house, you might think that the price tag is also going to be large. However, this dog house is very competitively priced and available for less than $70.
One of the huge benefits of this dog house compared to others, is how simple it is to both assemble and then use.
No tools, no complicated instructions... you simply click it all together. Thereafter, there is virtually zero maintenance other than a quick wipe-down to keep it clean.
Dog owners accustomed to paying more for everything, (food, medication) simply because their beloved pet is larger than most, will be delighted to see that this larger dog house is priced lower than many others.
The walls and joints, although adequate if the dog house is used as it was intended, are not strong enough to withstand larger dogs jumping on it, or rough play if your dog is particularly boisterous.
To choose a dog house purely on looks, would not be practical, but the appeal of this wooden dog house is it not only looks like an eye-catching piece of garden furniture, it also provides your dog with a perfect place to put its paws up when it needs a rest.

Not only does it look beautiful, it has a fresh, natural aroma, and it will resist pests, which is great for your dog's health.
Constructed from solid white cedar wood, this dog house is very strong and durable, but at the same time, lightweight enough to be moved if required. Assembly will require both a wrench and a screwdriver, but the instructions are very clear and simple, and with only six easy steps to complete.
To protect the wood in winter it has been sealed with a weather resistant coating which is non-toxic and certainly not harmful to your dog. This will ensure the dog house's looks and durability are not compromised in any way by rain or other moisture.
Other enhancements include a lined roof, to further protect your dog's house from water ingress, and a raised floor, to encourage air circulation so that your dog remains cool in hot weather.
Dogs come in all shapes, and more relevant when choosing a dog house, all sizes. This is not a problem as the Arf Frame Dog House comes in four sizes which should suit most dogs. Starting with extra small, this is suitable for tiny dogs weighing up to 15lbs., and at the other end of the scale, there is a large dog house, for dogs weighing up to 80lbs.
The wooden design of this dog house is so stunning some might call it a dog condo instead. It looks terrific and will be a great addition to any garden.
But it takes more than looks to make a product great... it also needs to be made from quality materials. Well, it has this too with a solid wooden construction that is both strong and durable.
When all too often there is only one size available, it is great to see that there are four size options.
This means dog owners can choose the size that is just perfect for their dog, whether it is a Miniature Poodle or a Labrador Retriever.
If you don’t like the idea of having to use tools to construct a dog house, then you might be put off, albeit the actual process is not too difficult.
There is also a danger of splitting the wood if the screws are overtightened, so great care needs to be taken when assembling the dog house.
Whilst it is a great natural material, for some the strong odor from both the wood and the coating may not be agreeable.
There is also the possibility that your dog may take to chewing the wood, which is not going to do much for the house's longevity.
This is a great looking dog house made from wood, which has strong construction, multiple sizes, and an asphalt roof to keep your dog dry when the rainy season comes calling.
Just by looking at them, there are some products which you can tell are well constructed and likely to last; this dog house is one such product. Although it does require assembly using a screwdriver, when fully built it is as robust a looking dog house as we have seen. This is in no small part due to the black metal supports for the sides, the front and back, and for the roof too. Add to this, the tongue and groove joints for the wooden slats, and you can be confident that this dog house is durable.
Red asphalt shingles on the roof will ensure, on rainy days, that any water drains away safely and they also provide a solid guard against any leakage through to the dog house’s interior.
If your garden or yard surfaces are uneven, you have the benefit of adjustable feet so that your dog's house can be completely level, making it both comfortable and safe for your dog.
Multiple sizes are available ranging from small to extra-large, so regardless of your breed of dog, there will be one to suit.
The strong construction which incorporates proper wooden joints and metal supports will reassure dog owners that this dog house is robust and suitable for even the most boisterous of pets.
Unlike many wooden dog houses, this one has the advantage of asphalt shingles, which are a further aid to prolonging the life of this product, by preventing any moisture ingress via the roof.
The doorway is rather narrow in relation to the size of the house so dogs carrying a bit more weight might have to squeeze themselves in or out.
As a result, it may be necessary to purchase a house which is one size up to overcome this issue, especially if your dog is carrying a few extra pounds.
On the subject of extras, you'll need a few extra dollars on your credit card, given that the price of this dog house is well over $100, which may seem high compared to others.
This plastic, extra-large dog kennel is suitable for larger breeds, or for housing two or more smaller dogs together, and given its size and weight, this is not so much a dog house, but more a 'Mutt's Mansion.'
Although it is one of the biggest dog houses we've looked at, don't be concerned that because of this it will be more difficult to assemble. It is very straightforward; the parts aren't particularly heavy and as you'd expect, all the screws and instructions are included. Armed with a screwdriver you should have it up and ready within minutes.
Made of durable plastic it is strong enough to withstand strong winds and heavy rain. Speaking of rain, you'll be pleased to know it is completely waterproof so your dog will remain dry and comfortable, even when there's a downpour.
On warmer, dry days the house has plenty of ventilation so that your dog stays cool, and the wide door ensures they get an ample supply of fresh air flowing through their house.
Plastic also means this a dog house which is very easy to clean, both inside and out. A simple wipe down is all it should take, although if it gets really dirty, a soft-bristled scrubbing brush can be used to get rid of more stubborn dirt and grime.
Often, larger dog houses have a door which is too narrow which defeats the whole point of a larger dog house. However, this manufacturer has realized that bigger dogs need wider doors and has wisely incorporated this into the design.
Despite its size, this dog house is very easy to maintain, and its durable materials mean it should last longer than most.
This is a very heavy product and once it is in place, it is very difficult to move. This could have been remedied either by the addition of small wheels on the base, or removable carry handles.
This is a unique and very versatile plastic dog house which can be used for puppies or smaller dogs and is small enough to be used indoors
This is a dog house that certainly stands out from the crowd thanks to its design, which includes a very distinctive blue roof with a curved apex. Whilst this has visual appeal, it is also a very practical design which allows any rainwater to drain away quickly.
While some small plastic dog houses simply clip together, for this one, you will need a screwdriver, although the actual assembly process is very simple and the time to complete it is no more than a few minutes.
Being a small dog house, it is lightweight, and therefore easily moved to a different location if the need arises. This does not mean it isn't robust, nor strong enough to withstand bad weather. The overall construction is very solid and even if your dog is energetic, it's house will bear it.
Keeping your dog cool is especially important for small dogs, and particularly when it gets hot during the summer months. This is achieved, thanks to excellent ventilation features which include vents along the length of the side walls and a circular one on the back wall. To aid ventilation further, the dog house sits on raised legs to allow air flow underneath too.
It looks like a lot of thought has gone into the design of this dog house, in relation to making it as suitable as possible for small dogs.
In particular, the ventilation system is the best we have seen so far, which will be a great benefit to your dog on hot days.
Although it doesn't have the same natural charm as wood, the visual design of this dog house is very appealing, and a lot more so than most other plastic dog houses.
Add to this its comparatively low price, it’s appeal increases even further.
While we know this has been specially designed for smaller dogs, we feel the manufacturers have missed a trick by not producing larger sizes of this dog house. All its features would be as suitable for German Shepherds, as they would be for Dachshunds
When trying to choose a dog house you must bear in mind that it's where your dog is going to spend a lot of their time, so you must strike a balance between choosing what is right for you, and how suitable it is going to be for them.
By all means, consider your budget, ease of assembly and maintenance as these affect you.
However, it is essential you also think about how suitable any dog house is for your dog’s size and weight, plus whether it will be safe and comfortable for them in both bad and good weather.
Thankfully none of the dog houses we have looked at require you to have an engineering degree to assemble them.
If you want the simplest, then a snap-together plastic house is the best option. For all the rest, if you know one screwdriver from the other, then you are good to go.
There are basically two: plastic and wood. Both bring different benefits, and your choice will be influenced by these.
Wood is natural, has an aroma and generally regarded as being more pleasing to the eye. It may require more maintenance in terms of coatings and treatments for waterproofing and is more difficult to keep clean.
Plastic is easier to maintain, easier to clean, and generally more robust when it comes to standing up to the elements.
All responsible dog owners know how dangerous hot weather can be to a dog's health especially if they overheat or suffer heat exhaustion.
To prevent these, a properly ventilated dog house allows the air to circulate around your dog to keep them cool. This can include vents in the walls, or the dog houses being raised off the ground.
Some dog houses offer better ventilation than others so check this carefully, particularly if you live in a warmer part of the country.
All these dog houses can be easily assembled in no more than 30-40 minutes and some in as few as 10 minutes. Assembly can be as easy as simply snapping together the pieces without the need for any tools, and others just need a screwdriver.
All of them are. The plastic houses will obviously be waterproof and therefore ensure the interior remains dry for your dog. Wooden dog houses are naturally weather resistant, which is enhanced with features such as tongue and groove joints, and asphalt roof panels.
Wood is a natural material which has unique aromas, and a very distinct appearance, although may require more maintenance than plastic. Plastic is tougher, more durable and easy to clean but lacks the natural look of wood. Wood wins for looks and character, plastic for durability and upkeep.
While they are primarily designed to be used outdoors, they can be used indoors too, with some caveats. Bear in mind the dimensions can be large so you will need a room in your home big enough for the dog house to fit in when fully assembled. With the wooden dog houses, their natural aromas might not be appreciated by all in the home.
Very little. In most cases, a simple wipe down with a damp cloth is suffice. In time, you may want to give a wooden dog house a re-stain if it starts to show any sign of fading, but it is not essential.
Given there are as many types of dog houses as there are breeds of dog, making a comparison between them is not always an exact science, given the variations in materials used, styles, construction, and features. However, having considered them all, and trying to balance the benefits to both the dog and its owner, we have selected the Suncast DH250 Dog House as our #1 choice.
For owners, it has the easiest assembly (snap together) and once in use is as simple to maintain and clean as any, with the added benefit of a removable roof to gain access to the interior for cleaning.
When it comes to your dog they will have a clean, roomy house, which is fully waterproofed, so they will stay dry and comfortable, even if the weather tries to spoil that. The great addition of a vinyl door will also keep the rain out in winter too. For hot days, there is plenty of ventilation to keep your beloved pet cool.
Add to all this the fact that the Suncast DH250 Dog House it is very competitively priced compared to other similar dog houses, then for most dog owners this should be a winner.
